Civilian Ride-Along and Observer Overview
Who Can Ride Along?
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Preference given to Fire Cadets, EMT, and Paramedic students
How to Apply
- Complete the Ride-Along Application
- Submit the following signed forms:
- Ride-Along Application (online)
- Accident Waiver and Release (emailed after initional application)
- Confidentiality & Non-Disclosure Agreement (emailed after initional application)
- Submit all forms before your requested ride date
- Incomplete applications will not be accepted
- A new application is required for each ride-along
When Can I Ride?
- General participants: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Students in Fire/EMS programs may be eligible for 12-hour shifts with pre-approval
- We’ll notify you of approval and scheduling details
- Arrive on time — late arrivals may result in cancellation
- If you can’t attend, please notify us ASAP. Unexcused absences may impact future ride opportunities
What to Wear
- Navy or black plain T-shirt or polo shirt (tucked in).
- Navy or black EMS-style pants.
- Black boots or shoes.
- Dark jacket (in colder weather).
- No shorts, logos, or advertising.
- Dress professionally — you represent the department.
What to Bring
- Bring food for meals/snacks.
- Riders are responsible for their own purchases.
Ride-Along Rules
Failure to follow these rules may result in immediate removal from the program:
- Riders are observers only under the supervision of Montgomery County ESD 9 personnel.
- Follow all directions from fire/EMS staff. Do not interfere with patient interactions.
- Remain seated and always belted in the apparatus while in motion.
- Do not handle any equipment unless instructed to do so in a life-threatening emergency.
- Concealed weapons are prohibited.
- No recording devices or cameras are allowed.
- No phone use near patients or on active scenes.
- Patient confidentiality is mandatory — do not share any information heard or seen.
